Yellow-eared Toucanet
Selenidera spectabilis

Yellow-eared Toucanet is a regionally-rare species that until recently was found only somewhat infrequently around Cerro Azul. Then Carlos Bethancourt and a group of British birders found one at Altos del Maria in May of 2006 (I viewed but did not collect a copy of a nice photo of the bird captured by one of the Brits), and Tino Sanchez found one at La Mesa, near Cerro Gaital, in August of the same year, likely a first for Coclé Province. The sightings of this enigmatic species have been somewhat sporadic throughout the length of Panama, so it is perhaps unsurprising that it has been found in new locales. It is certainly not common anywhere in the region, as subsequent efforts to attract this species by employing playback have yielded negative results.
