Wing-banded Antbird
Myrmornis torquata

This large and striking terrestrial antbird is apparently on the decline in central Panama; Carlos Bethancourt notes that he used to have reliable spots for this species along Pipeline Road, but hasn't found them fruitful in recent years. Perhaps a positive recent development is the good fortune of successive Field Guides Inc. tours in February of 2006, the first of which heard Wing-banded Antbird on Pipeline Road, the second of which actaully saw one. As a whole this species is represented by an isloated population in Nicaragua, with a large gap until central Panama, and then sporadically into Amazonian Brazil. If the Nicaraguan population is not genetically isolated then there must be some transitional population between there and Panama, so this species should be looked for anywhere.
