White-tailed Nightjar
Caprimulgis cayennensis

White-tailed Nightjar may in fact be relatively common in select open areas of the Pacific slope, but it is seldom-reported in any forum. A bird found roosting at Tocumen Marsh in September of 2006 (a lovely photograph by Dustin Huntington is shared below) was a life bird for Carlos Bethancourt, and a new bird for the Canopy Tower's list. White-tailed Nightjar should also be looked for in the savannas around El Chirú. Ridgely correctly notes that Spot-tailed Nightjar Caprimulgis maculicaudus should also be looked for in the region, as this species exhibits a large and curious range gap that includes all of Panama, the kind of gap that prompts speculation regarding taxonomic status. See Ridgely for detailed identification criteria.
