White-tailed Emerald
Elvira chionura

White-tailed Emerald, until the last couple of years, was known in central Panama only from the highest elevations of Cerro Gaital National Monument (generally found above the mirador, the highest point visited by most routine tours). On August 15th, 2005 Michael Harvey and José Perez found two White-tailed Emeralds at Altos del Maria, which represented the first record for Panamá Province and the easternmost for the species. Since then there have been multiple records from Altos del Maria , particularly around the eastern side of the Cerro del Gaital, and even two remarkable sightings from the gardens of the Canopy Lodge, both in the fall of 2006. Clearly there is much to be discovered regarding the seasonal movements of this lovely hummingbird.
