Snowcap
Microchera albocoronata

The exquisite Snowcap is one of the crown jewels for any birder visiting Central Panama, where it is now found with delightful regularity. Until the summer of 2005 it was known in Panamá Province from only two sight records at Cerro Campana. The initial explorations into Altos del Maria by Michael Harvey and Danilo Rodriguez revealed a solid population of Snowcaps in the area. Regular field trips to Altos have yielded countless additional sightings, with a remarkable high of 12 individuals found by a VENT tour in February of 2006. Most of the males I have personally observed have been found at the middle and high levels of flowering trees, but the female pictured below was gracious enough the perch at eye level, at Altos del Maria in September of 2006. I suspect that Snowcap will be found one of these days in eastern Coclé Province as well.
