Rufous-crested Coquette
Lophornis delattrei

This tiny and beautiful hummingbird has been found (much to the delight of visiting birders) with regularity in the gardens of the Canopy Lodge for the last couple of years. It is found easily enough that it is easy to forget that Rufous-crested Coquette was not known from Coclé Province at the writing of Birds of Panama. Little is known of the seasonal movements of this species; the fact that it occasionally disappears from El Valle for a couple of months at a time may be indicative of an altitudinal migration, or simply reflect the movements of individual birds. Continued reports submitted over the course of a long period of time may help determine the patterns of this splendid bird. Outside of El Valle visitors to central Panama may find Rufous-crested Coquette at Cerro Azul. I filmed the male below (it's a still from video) at the Canopy Lodge in May of 2006.
