Ruddy Foliage-Gleaner
Automolus rubiginosus

This furnariid is not found on the Canopy Tower's birdlist, as the only report is of a bird found on Semaphore Hill by myself, Jesse Fagan and Doug Holder in August of 2003. We were enjoying an early afternoon walk down the hill during a light rain when we found what was obviously a foliage-gleaner, observed for a minute or so from a distnace of less than 3 meters and at eye level. We did not recognize the bird as to species at first, but called out field marks as we observed the bird, and assembled those notes into a good i.d. when we returned to the Tower. We noted a dark furnariid with noticeable but limited contrast between the back and breast, a somewhat pale ocular ring, no contrasting wings (as in Slaty-winged), and a faintly dark supercilial stripe (not illustrated in every field guide). Unfortunately, none of us had cameras on hand for the sighting, but we felt confident in the diagnosis at the time, not understanding how unique this sighting was for the region. As a species Ruddy Foliage-Gleaner ranges throughout much of the neotropics, with scattered sightings throughout much of Panama, and so should be looked for anywhere.
