Ornate Hawk-Eagle
Spizaetus ornatus

This spectacular species is rare in central Panama, but can be found occasioanlly; there has been a relative explosion of reports from the region recently, amounting to four credible reports in 2006. Perhaps most remarkable was the sighting of an Ornate Hawk-Eagle on Semaphore Hill by José Soto, Robert Ridgely et. al. in September of 2006; the bird was eating a captured Central American Agouti!
