Orange-crowned Oriole
Icterus auricapillus

There are only sporadic reports of this stunning icterid from central Panama, as it generally seems to be a species of the lowlands of the eastern part of the country. But there are enough tantalizing reports of Orange-crowned Oriole to indicate that it may be moving (or at least regularly vagrant) farther west; there are several reports from the Canal area around Gamboa (where at least one Panamanian birder seems to have a secret stash somewhere around the Rainforest Resort), and Carlos Bethancourt found one at Tocumen Marsh in June of 2006. This is obviously a gem wherever found, and care should be taken to document the possible westward expansion of this species.
