Ocellated Antbird (Altos del Maria only)
Phaenostictus mcleannani

Ocellated Antbird is a prized find for birders visiting central Panama, but is still somewhat common around ant swarms in the Canal area (where I filmed the bird pictured below in July of 2005). Ornithologically-speaking the recent discovery of this species at Altos del Maria, at an elevation of about 950m, is much more noteworthy, as this is a high elevation for the species. In fact there are few reports of this species in the last century from the west side of the Canal, leading one to speculate as to the effect of the construction of the Panama Canal on a largely terrestrial species. Any report of Ocellated Antbird from the west-central foothills should be carefully documented.

A decent look at the stunning Ocellated Antbird, found at an ant swarm on Semaphore Hill.
