Gray Elaenia is generally considered a species of eastern Panama, although Ridgely notes in the latest edition
that there were a few sight reports from Pipeline Road (he somewhat dismissively amends this observation by noting that no specimens were
collected- on behalf of birders everywhere let me apologize for failing to carry a shotgun on all field trips!). The reports from Pipeline Road are sporadic, but
it is possible that commercial birding groups fail to specifically note this quite un-flashy species (although for most tours it would represent the rarest species
of a trip to Pipeline), so it may be underreported. I personally consider this a nemesis bird of sorts; it was once found by my companions as I wandered off on my own a bit, and we could not relocate the bird upon my return.
One sight record of Gray Elaenia from Plantation Trail in 1999 remains unverified and dubious.
