Gray-capped Flycatcher is one of the stripe-headed, yellow-breasted flycatchers in the genus
Myiozetetes (represented by three species in Panama- 5 other species in 5 other genera are
superficially similar). Gray-capped Flycatcher ranges widely in lowlands and foothills throughout much of Panama,
but is rarely found in the central region excepting in the Caribbean Canal area (it may be found on trips to Achiote Road).
It has recently been found to be quite regular at the village of Mata Ahogado, which lies at the extreme western edge of
Panamá Province, and which serves as the western gateway to the Altos del Maria area. This is a rather isolated population
(as currently understood), and likely provides the only records for western Panamá and for the central foothills as a whole.
Gray-capped Flycatcher is rather easy to distinguish from its congeners by virtue of its signature gray cap and an overall duller head pattern.
