Gray-breasted Crake
Laterallus exilis

The status of Gray-breasted Crake in Panama is a most intriguing subject. Prior to the year 2000 this species was virtually unknown from the isthmus. In subsequent years it has been found to be quite regular at the Gatún Drop Zone in Colón Province, and sporadic reports from both coasts have also been submitted. Carlos Bethancourt found Gray-breasted Crake at Tocumen Marsh in mid-September of 2006, the first report from this area. I returned to the spot with with Carlos on 9/25/06, and we succeeded in re-locating the species; I managed to collect some audio and murky video of the bird. This species' status in Panama is likely incompletely-known due to its skulking nature, and sightings are on the rise due to increased awareness on the part of local and visiting birders.
