This handsome and pretty much unmistakeable euphonia (all of the euphonias were
recently removed from the Thraupidae [tanagers] to Fringillidae [Cardueline finches and alllies])
has historically been known as a bird of the western highlands of Panama. So I was stunned to hear reports of several sightings
(of multiple birds) from the Altos del Maria area. This would represent a remarkable range expansion for the species, particularly
if evidence of breeding is collected. Word on the (Panamanian) street has it that photographs were obtained, a vital piece of evidence
for a discovery of such magnitude; I plan to chase down these photos in the near future. Elegant Euphonia would be a splendid addition to the bird list for
visitors to the Canopy Lodge, and a stark reminder of how much there remains to be discovered regarding the distributions of Panamanian birds!
