Burrowing Owl is listed on the Canopy Tower's birdlist, but at this writing I am not privy to
the source of that listing. At the time of the publication of
Birds of Panama there had been only one (century-old) record of this species from Panama.
Tocumen Marsh and the savannas of Coclé seem to offer the most likely habitat for this species,
but these areas have been so extensively converted to agriculture that the possibility of breeding Burrowing Owls seems
unlikely. Perhaps migrant birds account for the handful of records from southern Central America? This charming bird
is on the decline throughout most of its range, and any subsequent records from anywhere in Panama would be of major significance.
