This spectacular furnariid (woodcreepers joined this family as a result
of a 2006 taxonomic decision by the A.O.U.) was unknown from central Panama
(excepting Cerro Azul) at the writing of Ridgely's Birds of Panama. It has
recently (since 2005) been found to be relatively common in the cloud forests of Altos
del Maria. It is by no means an easy bird- it took me mulitple trips to the area to find one (three heard-only, two seen
in September, 2006). Brown-billed Scythebill seems to respond to playback, so it is likely to be observed if present on most occasions.
UPDATE! Two Brown-billed Scythebills were heard but not seen at Altos on January 7th, 2007; mediocre audio was captured. It seems that this species is heard quite regularly, but only seen with some work. |
