Black-headed Saltator
Saltator atriceps

Black-headed Saltator was little-known (although noted) from the Pacific slope of Panama until the birder saturation of the El Valle area in recent years revealed that this species is indeed locally common here (at La Mesa) and east to the edge of Altos del Maria. Canopy Tower guests may also find it on the Caribbean slope in coastal Colón Province.

Since early 2007 this species has been found to be increasingly common at the higher parts of the Canopy Lodge grounds, an unprecedented incursion onto the Pacific slope. The saltator is almost an easy find around La Mesa, where increasing knowledge of its vocalizations has led to more sightings.
