This elusive bird has been found somewhat infrequently at Cerro Jefe, but until recently was little-known
from central Panama. Its regional status may have changed with the discovery of this species at Altos del Maria by José Soto in
the spring of 2006. Elsewhere in its range it seems to replace its congener Black-faced Antthrush F. analis at elevations above 900 meters or so, which seems to
hold true at Altos. It is certainly rare at best in the region, and perhaps the continued efforts of birders judiciously employing playback will offer the best clues as to Black-headed
Antthrush's true status in the central foothills.
