In central Panama this handsome quail is most readily found at Cerro Azul/Jefe, although
it is not particularly common even there. Most intriguing is a recent report from Robert Ridgely, who was visiting
Altos del Maria in September of 2006 with a group of birders from the Canopy Lodge. Ridgely heard what he believed to be this species vocalizing
in the distance. I do not believe the birds(s) was recorded, but obviously the source is beyond credible, and the species' call is rather distinctive (it sounds
like a handsaw being pulled back-and-forth through a piece of wood). I am not aware of
any subsequent reports, but birders should be alert to the possibility, as a sighting in this location
would close up a large gap in Black-eared Wood-Quail's known range.
UPDATE!
Danilo Rodriguez and José Perez enjoyed the first sight records of this species at Altos del Maria on two occasions in early-mid
November of 2006. Subsequent efforts to find the bird(s) have been in vain, but only time will tell if a solid population exists in the region.
