Agami Heron
Agamia agami

This short, dark, and handsome heron has the tendency to lurk deep in undergrowth along streams and swamps, which it may be more overlooked than truly rare. It is reported very occasionally from Pipeline Road. Carlos Bethancourt found one at the Summit Ponds on May 1st, 2006, which I was fortunate to observe the next day in the company of my father and Tino Sanchez. As is typical of this species it stayed hidden in dark areas of the far bank of the pond, the result of which was that all efforts to photograph it resulted in a barely identifiable purplish blob! This is a gem of a bird, and worthy of careful documentation whenever found.

The Summit Ponds Agami Heron was relocated on April 4th, 2007, by Darién Montañez and the Canopy Tower's Carlos Bethancourt. This avian gem was first found by David Mandell and Jay Withgott on February 26th, and has since been seen sporadically by Tower tour groups. Photos were not submitted on this time around.

Carlos Bethancourt sent in the beautiful photo above of an Agami Heron, found at the Summit Ponds on March 11th, 2008; this bird was found on almost the same date and exactly the same place as last year's dry season Agami Heron.
