April 16, 2007: Olivaceous Piculet, Crested Eagle

April 16th, 2007.

A couple of interesting reports from the Canal area can be found on the Xenornis website. José Carlos García and Mahelis Rodríguez found an Olivaceous Piculet at the Gamboa Ammo Dump Ponds (a fine photo is posted as well). This diminutive woodpecker is very seldom seen in the Canal area. They've also posted an image of what appears to be a Crested Eagle found on Achiote Road, an outstanding find for the region (the only other possible i.d. based on the photo alone, Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle, would be no less noteworthy). It is interesting that this is the second report of Crested Eagle from the Canal area in recent months; click here to read Garth Riley's account of a probable Crested Eagle in Gamboa in January of 2007. Several birders also note that the Summit Ponds Agami Heron is still present, albeit a tough find. By the by, if you haven't checked out Xenornis I highly recommend you do so; it is a nicely designed website run by Panamanian birder Darién Montañez that covers the whole of Panamá, and Darién obviously has a much better line than I do on the contributions of the fine Panamanian birding community!
