March 22, 2007: Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo, by request!

March 22nd, 2007.

Only one report to share at this time, but it's a good one; Carlos Bethancourt tells me that a Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo was found along Pipeline Road on March 22nd, as if by request for a frequent visitor to Panama, Gail McKiernan. Perhaps I have been applying the wrong techniques in my own search for this species; I should simply ask for it on my next visit to Panamá! The relatively frequent reports of Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo on this site might give a misleading impression regarding the species' abundance; it is a really tough find, and the number of reports relates directly to its rarity, and to the skill and effort employed by the Canopy Tower/Lodge's guides. Many birders visit Panamá with the hope of spotting a Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo; very few are successful.
